What is a Hybrid School?
All good education depends on balancing the contributions of parents with the contribution of teachers or mentors outside the immediate family. Even the most ardent homeschoolers depend on books or curricula written by experts, and every good classroom school works hard to stimulate as much parent involvement as possible in the evenings and on weekends. In that sense, all education is hybrid.
A hybrid school is just more balanced than either of the extremes. We affirm the centrality of parents in the education of their children while recognizing the advantages of a disciplined classroom environment run by well-trained and knowledgeable teachers. With this in mind, our hybrid approach seeks to marry the advantages of home education with the supplemental benefits of classroom time.
Our Program
At Hammersmith, we spend two days a week in the classroom covering history, Bible, and literature, as well as nature studies and artist and composer studies. The remainder of the students’ education is parent-led (parents take the lead on reading, writing, math, and any other subjects of interest). The classes taught at school are supplemented with reading and practice throughout the week at home, and the skills taught at home are practiced through the course of study at school.
